Wow!! We all know this coast is pretty impressive but when you drive into Waitawa and stop at the top the view is extraordinary.

We are making a day of it, and plan to start the day at Hawthorne Dene Historic Country Cafe for a delicious breakfast.  This gorgeous house is a hidden gem and driving down the driveway you feel as you are driving into the past.  The scenic route through Whitford and onto Maraetai is one of my favourites with amazing views across the Gulf en route.  At Clevedon we take the Kawakawa Bay road through amazing countryside to our destination.

The day is perfect, and we are eager to get down to the beach and have a dip.  It is a popular spot, and we go for relaxing swim before embarking on an exploratory walk.  There are a number of cycle tracks and walking tracks to choose from remembering that it is pretty hilly so you do need to be reasonably fit. This region is of historical significance with 3 Pa sites on the various points.  Another swim later and a quick bite and we are ready to relax awhile and do some people watching.  Great spot for kids and plenty of activity in the water.

We were all amazing by this location and will definitely be back – maybe next time when its not quite as busy.

Our Tip:  If you intend doing one of the walks do take water and wear suitable walking shoes.  Don’t be in a rush – stop at the viewpoint at the entrance and take in the view.

Things to do nearby:

You pass Clevedon Oysters so perfect for a lunch stop.  Clevedon region is home to many artists, so stop in the quaint rural village and pop into Clevedon Creatives.  Hallertau makes its own range of craft beers.
