A dog friendly drive while you explore the stunningly beautiful Pohutukawa Coast with some dog friendly places to stop and explore.

Starting from Whitford Village, this drive takes you out along the Pohutukawa Coast to Magazine bay, Clevedon, then on to explore the Clevedon scenic Reserve finishing with drinks at Hallertau Brewery.

En route you will pass Woodzone, open at weekends, where beautiful, high quality NZ made solid wooden furniture, gifts, crafts and souvenirs utensils and household articles are made.  Pop in and take a look around.

Starting Point – Starting in the small country village of Whitford you can enjoy a light lunch at The Stables. Dogs are welcome if you dine outside and they remain on a lead. The Stables even provide a water bowl for your furry companion. The Stables Pub is located at 1 Whitford Wharf Rd.  While you there pop into Whitford Merchants right next door, and find some interesting food and drink.

Head along Whitford-Maraetai Rd towards Maraetai then along the Pohutukawa Coast Rd to the beautiful white shelled beach of Magazine Bay, where you will see an iconic wharf that appears in many TV commercials and movies. The bay got its name from the magazines of ammunition stored there during World War 2. There is a small carpark here and an ablution block. You can enjoy a long and leisurely walk along the beach, your furry companion might even choose to take a dip. Note that between 2 March to 30 November your dog is allowed off-leash down on to the beach. Over the summer period your dog is just allowed up on the grassy reserve areas.

Carry on along the tree fringed Pohutukawa Coast Highway past Duder Beach towards Clevedon Village. This lovely rural village has lots of cafes and little art shops.

Head up Thorps Quarry Road to the Clevedon Scenic Reserve Track, also known as Camp Sladdin by the locals. You will walk past Camp Sladdin which is an active camp used by Scouting and other groups. Walk over the suspension bridge, stopping first to spray your shoes to help prevent kauri die back. There are a variety of walking tracks through the native forest you can choose. Look out for the beautiful kauri trees growing in this reserve. Dogs are welcome to walk the tracks with you.

Head back to Clevedon for a well earned craft beer at Hallertau Clevedon, 26 Clevedon-Kawakawa Rd, Clevedon. They do delicious jalapeno peppers and wood fired pizzas. Your furry companion is welcome in the beer garden.
