Howick Evening Out

Enjoying the relaxed ambience of wonderful Howick Village and sampling food and drink from four local eateries

It was a lovely warm early summer evening and we met at the historically significant The Good Home, centrally located in a prominent position with a great patio where we could enjoy the warm weather and a cold drink.

Although there are plenty of places to enjoy food and drink from our vast diversity of cultures throughout the region, today we are visiting just four that are close together along Picton Street, the main road through picturesque and historical Howick. 

After our delicious cold beer we ambled up to Daisy Chang where Chef Bong rustled up an array of delicious dumplings, including vegetarian, prawn, pork, and mushroom.  After much chatting and eating we strolled through the Village to Basalt, where we were greeted by the manager, Praveen, and the lovely bar manager.  It was good to see the dining area was full, and we sat in the bar area, and enjoyed a fantastic sharing platter of delicious tasty morsels. 

We finished off the evening at The Corner, where we were treated to their delicious mini donut bites with warm caramel sauce.  Wow.  What a way to end.  They were amazing, and this very popular spot was busy as usual with manager Luke in charge.

This was a great evening supporting our local establishments who have survived this challenging year.  We all enjoyed the various locations and the food, and will continue to support our local hospitality businesses.  They all play a part in making Howick a fantastic place to visit, and a great place to live.

Things to do nearby:
With only four restaurants featured in the itinerary, there are many more in Howick from Italian to Japanese, Thai, Indian, Malaysian and Chinese – all within a very small area.  Howick is also very fortunate the have its own cinema, The Monterrey, so enjoy a pleasant meal in Howick and then watch a movie.  Howick has its own beach at the bottom of Uxbridge and Selwyn Roads.  Visit a café during the day, or if the children need some space, you could enjoy a local takeaway and sit down at the beach, listen to the lapping water and take in the fantastic view across to Beachlands and Waiheke.  The youngsters could have a paddle and play in the sand.  If you need some exercise after your meal take a walk up historically significant Stockade Hill – the 360° views are absolutely spectacular, and something not to be missed.  Lovely All Saints Church, one of the oldest in NZ, is floodlit at night and looks pretty as a picture at the top of Selwyn Road.
