Millions of innocent people were incarcerated in the hard labour camps of the GULAG system, including families with children. Katorga camps, forerunners to the Gulag, were established in Russia during the 17th century in underpopulated areas of Siberia and the Russian Far East. Most Poles who came to live in New Zealand during and following World War 2, are survivors of political exile in the Gulags. Although this is one of the most shocking periods of twentieth century history, it is not well known.
