The drive along the Pohutakawa Coast through Maraetai right to the end never fails to take my breath away as it is simply stunning.
On arrival check out the map showing the different walks available. Please take care to wash down those shoes very well with the brushes and sprays supplied – all in the quest to save our precious Kauri trees.
The first part along the road past the water is easy for all. The beach walk and other routes are recommended for those who have reasonable fitness level. Wear sensible shoes and sunscreen. Take water and even snacks as you could be out for between 2 and 3 hours depending on your route.
The beach path is a long walk along the waterside with various small private bays – lovely spots for picnics and swimming at high tide. This path does end and you will have to return the same way, but it’s a lovely walk through the shaded areas of indigenous bush with huge manuka and other trees. This pathway does get quite narrow and there are areas of mud to get through if you want to get to the end. The last bay has an area roped off which is tapu – sacred – to the local Iwi so please respect this place. Here is where you turn back.
The walk to Whakakaiwhara Point is quite challenging over the hills along past grazing sheep and cows. The very end is a small flat plateau with stunning views across to Waiheke and the other islands with the Coromandel’s high peaks in the background.
A lovely day out.
