We drove to the area, and stopped at Te Puru where we began our cycle.

The views across to Rangitoto and the islands while driving towards Whitford and then on to Beachlands and Te Puru are quite spectacular.
THis cycle ride is very enjoyable and pretty short ride along this section of the Pohutukawa Coast - starting at Te Puru, through to Omana Regional Park, along the pathway to the Maraetai Yacht Club and on to Maraetai Beach.
Easy cycling and a lovely experience with friends, and one I will repeat many times.

Our Tip:
Avoid times of commuter traffic during the week as the Howick to Maraetai road can get very busy. Dont be in a hurry. This region is so beautiful you will want to stop and admire the sea views.
Things to do nearby:
Stop for a swim en route - some lovely coves along Omana, and then Maraetai is fantastic swimming. Enjoy a coffee and great breakfast at one of the cafes along Maraetai Beach. Drive to quaint Clevedon and visit shops and art galleries, and continue out to Ardmore to NZ Warbirds and their museum which is open on Sat and Sun. Between Beachlands and Whitford is remarkable Ayrlies Garden - a private garden paradise open to the public for a donation (no young children due to water hazards) Whitford has a pub and a few boutique shops notably Whitford Merchants for unique and interesting whiskeys, gins and other products. Whitford also has a small pictuesque reserve on the Turanga Creek.
