Walking through east auckland’s hidden gems
East Auckland has amazing walks throughout the region – from easy strolls to challenging bush hikes.
The Pakuranga Rotary Walkway extends from Panmure Bridge for approx. 10 kms to Half Moon Bay Marina – an easy and very scenic walking along the Tamaki Estuary on paths and some boardwalks – popular with families.
For something more rugged the Mangemangeroa Reserve provides spectacular views with mangroves, indigenous forest, steep stairs and boardwalks. Situated between suburbia and country you can be forgiven for thinking you are far from civilization.
The Pine Harbour/Beachlands trail map illustrates a fantastic walk from The Pine Harbour Marina through Beachlands to Te Puru Park, Omana Regional Park, and beautiful Maraetai. Swimming is glorius en route. Pohutukawa trees proudly display their red flowers which give this coastline its name – the Pohutukawa Coast.
Further around the coastline is Duder Regional Park for easy to challenging walks and stunning views. Waitawa Regional Park and Tapapakanga Regional Park are equally stunning to explore with a number of trails. Inland is Hunua Ranges Regional Park with its waterfall, trails and paths.
The choice is not easy, and there is plenty of walking to be enjoyed, and best to wear suitable footwear and take a snack and water.

Duder Regional Park
The drive along the Pohutakawa Coast through Maraetai right to the end never fails to take my breath away as it is simply stunning.
Omana Regional Park
Omana Regional Park is, situated in between Beachlands and Maraetai Beach, is the ideal place to enjoy a family day out.
Beachlands – Maraetai Walkway
This shared walkway and cycleway passes the picturesque beaches and reserves along the coast between Beachlands and Maraetai. It provides access to popular Omana Regional Park and breathtaking views of the Hauraki Gulf, Waiheke Island and the Coromandel Peninsula.
Mangemangeroa Walk
Mangemangeroa bridges suburbia and rural countryside. At high or low tide the view from the top of the ridge down the valley to the estuary is quite spectacular.
Panmure To St Kents Rotary Walkway
Rotary Walkway from the Panmure bridge end. This walkway is stroller friendly, and do watch for cyclists as it is a shared path.
Eastern Beach Loop
Check tide times – this is a nice low tide walk to blow away a few cobwebs? Make sure you allow plenty of time to get back up off the shoreline before the tide returns.
Musick Point Coastal Stroll
This is a low tide walk around the peninsular, which is slippery so really only suitable for good walkers. For an easier and cleaner walk do the Halfmoon Bay to the Howick Golf Couse walk.
