Cycling
Cycling in East Auckland offers a multitude of options for novice and advanced riders.
The ferry from Auckland to Pine Harbour is used by casual riders to explore the coast leisurely along the save Beachlands Maraetai Walkway, which is a shared path from Beachlands to Maraetai. There you can stop for a coffee and a bite to eat and cruise back to the ferry back to town.
Road cyclists are riding the big loop Whitford, Beachlands, Maraetai, Umupuia, from there inland to Clevedon and back across the hill through Brookby to Whitford. This is on the open road and popular as a training course leading up to the annual lake Taupo race
Mountain bikers find their adrenaline fix in the Maraetai forest, which offers lots of trails for different ranges of ability. You need a day pass to enter the forest and access varies depending on logging activities in the area. The Pohutukawa Coast Bike Club offers updates on the trails, options of access, hosts race and even offers shuttles on certain days to take you up the hill.
